Lumicycle UK Limited is a small British firm based in Bournemouth on the South coast of England. Since its inception in 1997, the company has gone from strength to strength but its vision has remained the same – to produce the finest quality High Power Cycle Lights, assembled in the UK with a no-nonsense approach and great value for money. Lumicycle pride themselves on their commitment to customer service. Lumicycle assemble their systems in-house, using the best components and sell direct to the public. This approach allows Lumicycle to maintain a high level of quality control whilst ensuring customers get the value and service they expect.

Facts about the quality of Lumicycle lighting systems:

  1. Lumicycle use the best batteries available – Sanyo (Li-Ion) made in Japan (not China).
  2. Lumicycle use the brightest LED's currently available in the world (Cree).
  3. Battery chargers are made in Norway - not China (very important).
  4. Lumicycle alluminium lamp housings are CNC machined in the UK.

The three critical components of a light system are: 1. Light head  2. Battery pack  3. Charger. There are Aussie brands out there claiming 'Made in Australia' when 2 of the 3 critical components are actually made in China. If comparing competitors product find out for sure where their battery cells & chargers are made before you make a decision.

Lumicycle lighting systems have received rave reviews from the press and have been recognised as the “benchmark” against which other systems are measured. Although most often associated with night mountain bike and road riding, these lights have also proved their worth to a number of specialist users who demand the best. For this reason, Lumicycle lighting systems are the product of choice for the police, military, paramedics, vets, explorers and adventure racing teams in the UK.

New lumicycle LEDs

Lumicycle LEDSystem3. A new series of high-powered LEDs designed to offer the user the best lighting experience possible. For this product range Lumicycle have selected the CREE  LED which  outperforms all other LEDs on the market today and because of its quality will maintain a good lumen output for many years. Add to this lumicycles unique driver technology that delivers 95% output at full power and the latest 2.6 Amp/Hour Li-Ion batteries and you have a system that delivers ultimate performance and huge run times.

Compatibility has always been central to Lumicycle's core designs so that battery and lamp technology can be used in any configuration, allowing customers to swap and upgrade equipment as and when they wish. The new LEDSystem3 will complement the award winning Halogen and Halide systems, providing either an upgrade path for existing Lumicycle riders or an entry path for new riders looking to join the Lumicycle family.

Off-road riding demands flexibility in your lights. The LEDSystem3 head is available as a Spot or a flood, allowing riders to retain the flexibility of a two-lamp system, so popular with Lumicycle Halogen system riders. As the terrain changes you need lights that can provide for technical trails as well as faster flowing tracks. Lumicycle have for years realised that a spot and a flood offers riders the most complete choice - and now this choice has got better. With different modes of brightness, the rider can select his/her choice of light output.

Lumicycle test riders found the level they felt most comfortable with still left them with two more, including the 'boost' mode which provides for those extreme, fast downhill, pushing the lamp to an amazingly powerful brightness - watch your eyes! The light output provides good clear definition of the ground ahead - tree roots, cambers etc, whilst still providing peripheral light, so important when riding. The transition between the modes is smooth and delicate so as not to confuse the eye. Colour temperature is often more important than most realise. A warm light offers better detail and depth perception - a sympathetic light that our eyes are familiar with as in sunlight, candle, and fire. The new LEDs are designed to be run at maximum output whilst retaining a warm colour. Many other LEDs achieve a warmer colour by reducing the actual lumen output - often considerably less than the specified figures.

On the back of the lamp unit a multi colour LED provides constant indication of the power mode you are in. In addition, the same LED functions as an integral fuel gauge utilising a subtle, slow indication of remaining battery life. Existing customers can take full advantage of this facility as it operates with all existing Lumicycle batteries, NiMH and Li-Ion. The power socket has been completely re-designed to provide a reliable connection that does not easily pull out, but will disconnect should a lead get caught on a branch or other. It is also backwards compatible with Lumicycle's older batteries. The switch retains its physical appearance but is also a new design allowing selective switching up and down through the different level modes unlike others where you are required to cycle through a dim level to get to a bright one - have you ever tried that on a dark night on a 1 in 4 slope at 50 kph?

The feel of the switch is positive and intuitive - even in the cold with gloves on and its placement makes it easy to find with your thumb. Also there's no chance of accidental 'black-out' as you are required to 'hold' for it to switch off or on - another good safety point.

The LED head is light (129g) and stylish. On a helmet it comes into its own being light and powerful with easy to use adjustments. With a flood on your bar and spot on your helmet you have the perfect duo.

If you are a road cyclist you will understand all too well the dangers of not seeing far enough ahead whilst travelling at speed. The spot will be your likely choice producing a piercing light that allows you to see clearly ahead. Some riders will also want to ride with the flood as well, providing additional width and security with excellent near-wheel coverage even at speed.

Urban riders in towns and cities need lights that motorists and other road users can see. This is even more important on unlit, fast roads. Safety is paramount as well as the quality of light and reliable run-times. The LEDSystem3 fulfils all these requirements and more, providing side illumination with the optional GlowRing attachment and a typical 40 hours runtime on the smallest battery - enough to get you to work and back, all week, on a single charge!

Lumicycle provides yet again, a system that is compatible and upgradable. As new LED technologies arrive you will be able to change the LEDs in the unit as an upgrade - no having to buy a new system. What about the rechargeable batteries? In the LEDSystem3 the battery cells are the new 2.6ah - giving a 20% increase in running times over 2.2ah Li-Ion cells. The 2.6ah cells will also be available for existing customers should they wish to upgrade. So whatever style of rider you are the LEDSystem3 provides the light you have been waiting for. Nothing comes close to it in performance, cost, or technology. You will not be disappointed. You will want one.

So what else? Support. Lumicycle know that customers have high expectations of their lights and expect a high quality, well thought out, lasting product. Ever wiped out and wrapped yourself round a tree? Accidents happen. So, as always, Lumicycle will continue to offer their unrivalled support so proudly written about by customers across the globe. Spare parts are extensively available, giving you the assurance that your investment will last well beyond any other make. Lumicycle believe in buying once and making it last - you know it makes sense.

Finally, at Lumicycle they  like what they do. They all ride, so it's important to produce the worlds best lights. Lumicycle use the best materials and components, assemble everything by hand in the UK to order and test and use the latest technology. They keep their designs simple but effective. We can't think of any reason why you would go anywhere else.

Lumicycle celebrates ten years (2009)

After humble beginnings in the shed at the bottom of the garden, Lumicycle has reached its tenth birthday. Having won many awards over the years for the now famous Halogen and Halide systems, Lumicycle enters the tenth year with yet another new technology LED. Based on the south coast of the UK, Lumicycle continues to grow but still remains true to its original spirit, that of producing great quality lights at a low cost and with the best after sales service. Steve continues to be innovative, Jon manages the sales enquiries. Alan sorts and tidies away all their paperwork and occasionally helps with the sales. For the past two years they have had international help in the form of Ramatu a young intelligent women from Ghana who became the fountain of all lumicycle knowledge, Michal a hard working, intellectual from Poland who became a good friend to all and Ludo from France who was just so typically french. Others, too many to mention here have also contributed to the success of the Lumicycle company over the past ten years. And of course a big thank you must go to all Lumicycle customers who have stuck with and believed in the products. Happy Birthday Lumicycle!
